Self Install

If you’re not in the market for a new car, then by far the easiest way to get DAB radio in your car is to buy a simple gadget known as a ‘short range device’ that plays through your existing FM radio. The PURE Highway is one example.

1. Affix aerial to windscreen.
2. Attach the mount to the windscreen – just like a sat nav system.
3. Attach Highway to mount.
4. Connect aerial and power.

This is simplicity itself to install. You plug the PURE Highway in to your lighter socket and it sits on the dashboard or windscreen, like a sat nav. Next, you tune your car radio to a free FM frequency – a display tells you which frequency to select – and the Highway transmits DAB stations to your existing car stereo. You can also listen to your iPod or MP3 player over the car speakers while you’re driving. The PURE Highway typically costs around £69. Purchase your PURE Highway from John Lewis or Buy Digital Radio.

There are other options too. You can purchase an integrated DAB system to replace your existing radio, with prices starting at around £200. Alternatively, prices for a DAB ‘hideaway box’ begin from around £299, but you need to be sure you have a compatible head unit. With either of these options, you may need to pay a professional to fit the equipment and you’ll need to make sure that you have a DAB-specific aerial too.
