Digital radio listening and ownership continue to increase

• Over 800 000 new to digital radio listeners in the last 3 months
• Digital radio listening hours up 19% year on year to reach 217 million hours per week across all digital platforms
• DAB ownership up 22% year on year with one third of population now living in a household with a DAB radio
The number of people tuning into their favourite radio stations via a digital platform is continuing to increase steadily, according to the latest RAJAR figures released today.
According to Q2 2009 figures, 800 000 more people have begun listening via a digital platform in the past 3 months, with digital radio's share of all listening increasing 19% year on year and 5% quarter on quarter. Overall, 21.1% of listening is now via a digital platform.
Of all digital platforms, listening via DAB radio leads the uptake, with a 13.1% share of listening compared to a 3.6% share for digital TV and 2.2% share for internet.
Supporting this increase, the proportion of the population now having access to a DAB radio at home has risen to over one third, with nearly 17m adults now living in a household with a digital radio, compared to 14m for the same period for last year.
Tony Moretta, Chief Executive, Digital Radio Development Bureau, said:
"These figures confirm that more and more radio listeners in the UK are embracing the enormous benefits of digital radio. The numbers are particularly heartening as they show that there are a quarter of a million new people every month tuning on to digital radio."
